Chapter 13
Two days later, my eyes opened to a whole new world.
For once, I didnât feel the need, not even for one second, to lie perfectly motionlessly and pretend I was still unconscious.
Instead, I laid on the bed and took in my surroundings. Adjusting.
It was nighttime.
How did I know that even though the windows were completely blacked out?
I heard an owl hooting, mice scurrying, and bush crickets chirping. The noises were so overwhelmingly loud they were impossible to ignore and made vibrations in my ears as if they were all happening just centimeters away from me. But I was in the bedroom, in the cabin, in the middle of the woods with the windows tightly closed.
Everything was loud. With minimal effort, I heard the sounds of the cars and semi-trucks speeding down the highway, miles and miles away from where I was in bed. The sounds of the rubber tires moving over the paved roads were so vibrant and so clear it was almost as if I could see them in my mind just by hearing them. A truck veered off the road slightly and hit the rumble strips, another carâs brakes squealed as they turned off at an exit, I might as well have been standing on the side of the road.
And if I was standing on the side of the road, I imagined Iâd be able to see every ridge in the tires and every single piece of gravel on the highway. My vision was just clear or sharpened or heightened or whatever other words doctors used to describe vision. It was crisp. It was detailed.
I could see everything.
I looked down at the black sheets pulled tightly around me and I could see every single thread used to make them. When that wasnât enough, I looked at my hands. I brought them up to my face and studied them. They couldnât have possibly been mine, even though I was the one moving them. Every ridge in my skin was visible, every pore, every hair that was previously too tiny to see stood out glaringly with my new eyes. Had I always been this hairy?
If my hands looked so foreign and so full of imperfections, I couldnât imagine what my face looked like. Or other parts of my body . . .
I couldnât breathe.
I threw the covers off my legs, carefully avoiding looking at them, and sat up. But everything was happening all at once. It was as if the second my brain thought to do something, move, any kind of action, I had already done it.
My chest heaved.
âYouâre okay.â Zander was suddenly at my side, his hands on my shoulders. âEverything is okay. Everything youâre feeling right now, any pain, any discomfort, itâs all in your head.â
That couldnât have possibly been true. I couldnât breathe. He didnât know how tight my chest was or how my lungs refused to fill with air like punctured balloons.
âI . . . I feel like Iâm dying,â I choked the words out. âI canât breathe and Iâm dying.
